Aide insists Umeh is no threat to Ngige’s senatorial ambition

Following the declaration of his senatorial ambition last weekend by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Chief Victor Umeh, his rival, Senator Nwabueze Chris Ngige says he has nothing to worry about.

Ngige, who is currently representing the Anambra Central senatorial district spoke through his media aide, Chief Charles Amilo.

Chief Amilo in an exclusive interview with DailyPost said that Umeh was the least of the problems of the distinguished senator as his declaration speech during his 52nd birthday had not even been discussed by the Ngige camp.

He dismissed with a wave of the hand the opinion that the Anambra Central Senatorial election in 2015 may be a replica of the 2011 battle between his boss and late Prof Dora Akunyili, insisting that Umeh would be an easy win for the Ngige camp.

While noting that it would be a disadvantage for APGA to field Umeh, he stated that unfortunately, Umeh who is the national chairman of the party, would go ahead to issue himself the party’s nomination form.

According to him, “Umeh is the national chairman of the party, but you must know that he has never stood for an election in his life. Not even as a councilor. He should go ahead and pick the nomination form and appoint himself as the candidate of the party, and we will deal with that.

“Umeh has no clout, he is not in the mold of late Dora Akunyili, who was the Director General of NAFDAC, where she performed very well and also a minister of Information, and a bright scholar, yet Ngige defeated her.

“Oga is not losing sleep about the declaration of Umeh, he has a lot of things to do, and he is going about his senatorial duties. In the next few weeks, he will commission transformers to be distributed to communities in Anambra; they have already been connected to the national grid.

“In the whole place, there are evidences of the things he has done as a senator, and his job when he was the governor of the state is still speaking for him till date. We are waiting for Umeh to buy form and meet us in the field.

“We know he will be planning how to rig the election, as that is the only thing he knows how to do”.

Mikel Obi & Moses Left Out of Chelsea’s Tour List

The Super Eagles duo were not listed in in the 26-man squad for the tour which was released by Jose Mourinho on Monday. Anglo-Nigerian youngster Dominic Solanke was however named in the squad along with the newly-signed trio of Cesc Fabregas , Diego Costa and Filipe Luis.

Mikel at Nigerian Brewies Conference, recently

The future of both players at the club has been in doubt in recent times.

Moses was farmed out on loan to Liverpool last season, but following an unsuccessful spell with the Reds and multiplicity of options at Stamford Bridge, his future currently hangs in the balance.

Mikel on the other hand, has been unsettled at the club since the turn of the year having lost his place in the team to Nemanja Matic.

The 27-year-old has already been told to look for new employers, with the club agreeing to lower their asking price.

Rivers APC condemns harassment of Oby Ezekwesili at Abuja Airport

The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress has condemned the harassment of the former Minister of Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, by the operatives of the Department of State Security at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The state Chairman of the APC, Dr. Davies Ikanya, said in a statement on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Chukwuemeka Eze, that the action of the SSS operatives was unwarranted, shameful and a throwback to the dark days of military dictatorship.

Ikanya also described the action of the security operatives as barbaric, wicked, unjust and a slap on the faces of the abducted Chibok girls, who had spent over three months in Boko Haram’s custody.

For SSS operatives to attempt to confiscate the travel documents of Mrs. Ezekwesili and seek to prevent her from boarding her flight just because she is leading the campaign to get the Goodluck Jonathan administration to do something meaningful to free the abducted Chibok schoolgirls speaks eloquently about the government’s lack of seriousness in looking for these innocent girls who were in the first place, abducted because government abdicated its responsibility of providing their school with the needed security,” he said.

This means that Nigeria has returned to the dark days of military dictatorship when the rights of Nigerian citizens were trampled upon with impunity.

The Chairman lauded the former minister and her group for refusing to be intimidated and continuing with the ‘BringBackOurGirls’ campaign in spite of efforts by the Presidency to force them to shun the campaign.

He said, “The Rivers APC commends Dr. Ezekwesili and her group for refusing to be cowed and for forging ahead with the #BringBackOurGirls campaign despite all efforts by the Presidency to get them to abandon the struggle.

“We are happy that this act of tyranny aimed at intimidating Dr. Ezekwesili has failed woefully. We appeal to this woman of rare courage and her group to soldier on until the Jonathan administration does the right thing by rescuing and bringing home the over 250 schoolgirls abducted from their dormitory by the Boko Haram sect on the night of April 14.

“We are happy to note also that the SSS operatives later allowed reason to prevail by releasing the travel documents of this great amazon of our democracy and allowed her to travel for her scheduled London event.

Bukky Wright’s second marriage allegedly crashes

It appears that the second marriage of popular Nollywood Actress, Bukky Wright with her husband, Adewale Onitiri, has crashed.

Report says the couple almost ended the 4-year old marriage a while back, but family members and close friends saved the day. However, the marriage has finally crashed, NET reports.

The crash resulted from a big gap created by distance. While Bukky resides in Lagos for her career and to run her businesses, her husband, whose first wife died of cancer related issues, resides in Trenton, New Jersey, where they got married.

Trouble reportedly reared its ugly head after Superintendent Adewale Onitiri returned to Nigeria unannounced, only to meet his wife’s absence at their Ajah, Lagos home.

It was further alleged that the movie star lied about her whereabouts when he asked where she was.

With other unconfirmed tales of his wife’s alleged escapades in the country while he was in America, Mr. Onitiri was said to had flared up and requested she vacates the couple’s Ajah, Lagos home.

Commentators question due process in Rivers state

Social critics have accused the Rivers State Government of overlooking and neglecting due process procedures in the state.

The state Government recently launched 2 Automated Road Analyser Vans, ARNVANS, meant to ease the monitoring of road projects in the state.

Amaechi, who unveiled the ARAN vehicles at the Government House in Port Harcourt, said the
device would ensure that projects were executed according to specifications.

The Governor said the vehicles would be driven on newly constructed roads to determine their quality, adding that the measure would check fraudulent activities by some contractors who failed to adhere to project specifications.

However, a Finance analyst, Biobele Arimie said the two automated road analysers by the Rivers State Bureau of Public Procurement is a reckless act and totally out of the purview of the Franklyn Ileru-led due process bureau in Rivers state.

He told the media in Port Harcourt that the Rivers State Public Procurement Bureau has confirmed that it lacked competence and understanding of its functions.

According to him, “We should know that the law establishing the bureau only mandates the bureau to take charge of systems, processes and procedures.

“They are not a project management group. The bureau is supposed to ensure that people comply with rules, regulations and procedures. Having said this, what the bureau has done now is to spend millions of Rivers State money to acquire a van that is supposedly meant to be used by the Ministry of Works.

“It is the responsibility of the Ministry of works to construct roads and to ensure the monitoring of the road, to supervise the construction of the road and issue certificates for the compliance of standards.

“Now the bureau has left her responsibility of ensuring that due processes are complied with”, he alleged.

“We are yet to even do procurement audit which we are supposed to do twice every year. They have abandoned their statutory responsibility.

“Section 3(0) setting up the Rivers State Public Procurement Law clearly says the bureau shall perform public procurement audit and submit such report to the State Assembly bi-annually.

“Six years after, they have not done that. They are going to buy vehicle.

“What the law says they should do, they have refused to do”, he added.

Arimie, who is also the Head of Certified Procurement Professionals in Rivers and Bayelsa states also challenged the Franklyn Ileru-led bureau of public procurement to explain to the people why it has not published information of procurement activity as demanded by its laws.

“I want to win everything at Chelsea” – Fabregas

New Chelsea signing Cesc Fabregas, has said he is itching to win every available trophy this season at Chelsea.

The former Arsenal captain completed a €38m move to Stamford Bridge before the 2014 World Cup kicked off and has linked up with the Blues ahead of their pre-season tour in Austria.

Fabregas reveals he was delighted the transfer was sealed early and insisted he made the right decision to move to Chelsea.

“My ambitions? My ambitions are to win absolutely everything,” he told the club’s official website.

“It was very important for me that the deal was done before the World Cup. I wanted my head free and to know what I was going to do next season and where I was going to be.

“I thought I was at the right age and I believed I wanted a change. I looked at all the offers I had and after speaking to the coach I thought Chelsea was the best decision.

“Jose’s teams are always difficult to beat and always difficult to play against. Tactically they are very well-composed and they have discipline. He gets the best out of his players.”

The Barcelona youth product will be playing along with his international team-mates Fernando Torres and Diego Costa next season and is looking forward to linking up with familiar faces.

“I started playing with Fernando when I was 18, on my debut for the Spanish national team, so we’ve been playing together for nine years,” he said. “We have won two European Championships and the World Cup together.

“I really like playing with him. He’s really strong, he goes behind defenders and his movement off the ball is superb. I’m sure we’ll have a good partnership together.

“Diego has been progressing immensely in the last couple of years.

“He is a real threat in every single game; last season he was playing every three days and he was consistently giving really strong performances.

“He goes behind the defence and he makes the kind of runs players like me really like because it gives you an option to play the killer ball. I think he will do superbly here.”

Manchester City cancel friendly over racism claim

A friendly game between Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad and HNK Rijeka, was called off on Tuesday, after an alleged incident of racial abuse.

City players were asked to leave the pitch shortly before half-time, after a member of HNK Rijeka was reported to have taunted Seko Fofana.

The current EPL champions confirmed in a statement that it was the club’s management that decided to withdraw the team and cancel the match.

Match officials, City representatives and the Croatian Football Association are currently deliberating if the matter will be pursued further or not.

“We want to dominate the Premier for the next 10 years” – Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has revealed that he is putting together a Chelsea team, that is capable of dominating football in England for the next decade.

The Blues boss has signed Cesc Fabregas, Filipe Luis and Diego Costa so far this summer for a combined £80m and has already insisted his dealings in the transfer market is over.

He said at a press conference in Velden, Austria: “A team which has been a winning team for ten seasons is changing step by step, we’ve bought new players and we are trying to build for the next decade.

“Last year we reached the semi-finals and it was a transitional season. We had a very young team at the time but, even so, we reached the semi-finals and were playing to win the competition.

“This season we think we are going to be stronger, the younger players are more experienced, they are stable and better adapted to fighting for titles.”

Mourinho also stated that he would have left his post at Stamford Bridge, if he thought he could not achieve success with Chelsea next term.

“If I didn’t think that way I would go home and let somebody else take charge of the team,” he continued.

“People can speak about other leagues but England is the only country where five or six teams can win the title. Football is about competitiveness every weekend and that only happens in the Premier League.

“When you have the two Manchester clubs, the three clubs from London – Tottenham, Arsenal and ourselves – plus Liverpool, that’s six top teams, where all of them can win the title. That’s why everybody loves the Premier League.

“At Chelsea, if we didn’t think we could win the league, or didn’t think we had the quality to do it, we wouldn’t be here working so hard.

“We respect our opponents and their ambitions, because they have the same ambitions as us, but we want to win the Premier League and we are ready for that.”

Gara-Gombe says Minister’s inexperience, lack of patriotism to blame for FIFA’s ban on Nigeria

Alhaji Shuaib Gara-Gombe has blamed the inexperience of Minister of Sports and chairman, National Sports Commission, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, for the recent ban on Nigeria from FIFA.

The world football governing body suspended the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), after a court sacked the Aminu Maigari-led board and appointed a caretaker group to handle the country’s football.

FIFA deemed the process to represent government interference and acted accordingly. However, the ban was lifted after the court case was withdrawn and Maigari’s board was reinstated.

“I feel relieved because at this time in our football history we should not be going through this kind of avoidable prejudice by actions and inactions of very few people in our society to warrant such sanction from FIFA,” Gombe told Goal.

“The ban could have been averted. It was sheer inexperience, selfish interest and lack of patriotism.”

Gombe, who is Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor on Sports and seasoned football administrator, also offered advice that will avert a repeat of such incident in the future.

He said: “Honestly speaking, we need to come up with a transitional arrangement towards the disengagement of government from funding and administration of football in Nigeria.

“Without doing that, these problems will keep resurfacing. We had this kind of scenario in 2006 but it was carefully handled and we escaped FIFA’s sanction. In 2010, we had a similar crisis which was well handled maturely and with experience,” he continued.

“It happened again this year and we got banned by FIFA because it was not managed properly due to the inexperience of our minister and it is regrettable.

“For instance, the Falconets preparing for the FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup in Canada, I’m very sure they have put in their best in terms of preparations. If this suspension had not been upturned by Fifa, it would have been demoralizing and could have affected the careers of the young girls.

“The Super Eagles are African champions and our U-17 team are World champions and qualifiers begin next week. If we have not been left free by FIFA, we could have suffered irreparable blows. I’m happy the ban was lifted.”

“Bayern Munich will sack me if I don’t win next season” – Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has admitted that he will be sacked as Bayern Munich manager, if he fails to deliver on expectations next season.

The Spanish tactician won the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal in his debut season at the Allianz Area, but was knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid.

“There are no secrets. If I don’t win, another coach will come next year,” he told reporters. “I came to do my job the best way possible, like I did at Barcelona. I came to a different country where they play football in a completely different way.

“I intend to adapt myself and hope that they adapt to my ideas, but that process is not something achieved in a year.

“We won the Bundesliga and we won the Pokal in an incredible season. What happened against Madrid was a shame. Not that we lost, but that we lost an opportunity.”

Guardiola also claimed that too many teams were trying to play like his Barcelona side, but had a word of warning for those teams.

“All the people went and copied that. It’s a big mistake. You copy that and you won one day because of that. But one day you are going to lose.

“Be patient with the coach and the player and you are going to be good.

“Any system is good, any system is wrong. I’m not convinced England and Italy went out [of the World Cup] because their system is wrong or Germany won because their philosophy is right.

“Spain lost and they will keep going with the same coach and the same style of play. And maybe they will go back. It’s a matter of believing in what you do.”

New United manager Louis van Gaal is keen on the Gunners skipper and is ready to pay up to £10m for the defender, who is now in the last year of his current deal.

Van Gaal is still assessing his squad ahead of the new season and has been promised huge funds to bring in recruitments over the summer.

My parents didn't want me to marry Soyinka'- wife opens up on love story

Wife of Prof. Wole Soyinka, Folake Soyinka  opened up on their love story in an interview with The News magazine where she revealed how she and her husband met and her parents initial objection to their relationship.
"There were objections from everywhere except from my sisters and brother who were happy if I was. I also had the support of his siblings here.
My parents along with most of my relatives objected, not because of anything, they just felt he was too famous and too accomplished. They worried about that. But within a few months after we were married, my parents had changed their mind and they loved him until they passed away. His close friends didn't have a problem with it but also everyone had an opinion. Then came the Nobel Prize in 1986 and that derailed everything for a couple of years. More than a quarter of a century later, those opinions didn't count, we are still trudging along. I have enjoyed love because of him" she said

On how they met;

"I knew he liked me from when I was in the University of Ife but I was young and he was so accomplished so I was kind of worried. After I left Ife and went to do my NYSC in Kaduna state, Dr Biodunjeyifo came to visit me and said Kongi (Prof Wole Soyinka) had been looking for me. After the service year, Dr Yomi Ogunbiyi who was at the Guardian got me a job there and one day, Wole stopped by. Our courtship was interesting" she said

She also revealed that the Nobel laureate, who turned 80 recently, is a great cook;

"He cooks and he is quite good at it. He even cooked about two days ago. When the boys were really little, one day in California, he called all of us to the kitchen and said he wanted to have a family meeting. They were so young I don't even think they had any concept of what a family meeting was. He lined all three according to their heights and asked me to sit. He said he has something to tell us and he was only going to say it once. He whipped some cooking utensils, moved them around noisily in the pot, threw some up, caught them performed a few tricks and then told us to listen. He said there were only three people in the world who can cook pasta like he does; one is dead, the other is in Silica, Italy and he is the third one and he is going to cook something that we have never eaten. He cooked pasta that day and we truly enjoyed it. True dramatist." she said.
