Remy’s Chelsea move in doubt after Arsenal activate release clause

According to incoming reports, Arsenal have joined the race to sign Loic Remy from Queens Park Rangers, after activating his £8.5m release clause.

The France international was believed to be heading to Chelsea, with Jose Mourinho keen to replace Fernando Torres, who has signed a two-year loan deal with AC Milan.

Remy was close to agreeing terms with the Stamford Bridge club, before Arsene Wenger contacted QPR and indicated he would pay the fee.

Wenger is now seen to have a slight advantage in the race to land the 27-year-old striker, as he is French and Remy is a self-confessed Gooner.

If Chelsea lose out on Remy, Mourinho will now look to quickly tie up a deal for Mattia Destro from Roma.

Etcetera Adresses Omoni Oboli’s ‘Indecent’ Dressing To Aso Rock | Read

Etcetera is back. In this edition of his weekly Punch column, the writer and singer talks about indecent dressing and actress Omoni Oboli’s recent choice of dress at Aso rock.

Read below..

Remember Monica Lewinsky? If you do, then you should also remember the “Blue Dress” she wore to the white house that got President Clinton, the most powerful man in the world and the then president of the United States of America almost impeached. And 16 years on, just when everyone thought the seductive blue dress has been locked away in a highly secured vault somewhere at the pentagon, it reared its dangerous head at Nigeria’s presidential villa, worn by a nollywood actress for her movie premiere.

Only this time, it was seductively patterned as a strip wear. Is the second donning of the dreaded blue dress a decoy to seduce another president? This time around, the president of the most powerful black nation in the world. Well, your guess is as good as mine. I can still remember being glued to my laptop trying to make sense out of the picture of our president shaking hands with “The lady in blue”, with a larger part of her cleavage exposed for the world to see.

It got me wondering how anyone dressed in such a manner could have been allowed anywhere near the presidential villa for any reason. How did she get past security? The habit of indecently dressed nollywood actresses tiptoeing around the presidency should not be permitted. The presidential villa is no place for a movie premiere, neither is it a place for a dress rehearsal of any sort. And as far as I can remember, the federal ministry of tourism never issued any statement declaring the presidential villa a tourist site.

So please take your sliced gowns and facial foundations elsewhere. After all there’s been no complaints about the architectural foundation upon which the presidential villa stands. Let us stop distracting the President from his constitutional duties unnecessarily. Leave him alone to concentrate on more pressing matters of state. His constitutional duties do not revolve around entertainers. I can’t see how premiering your movie at the presidency serves this nation?

It is a no-brainer that the president needs time and space to concentrate and fulfil his elective duties, but I find it baffling that some entertainers don’t seem to understand what distractions are? And If you reasoned, your movie will help pull the country’s head above the parapet, why not have it screened at a pubic cinema to the benefit of all? Please for the love of this country, keep the vanity fair and celebitchy attitude away from the presidency.

We always take things to the extreme in this country. Very soon the musicians will start taking their album listening parties and their musical video premieres to the presidential villa. Can you imagine Angelina Jolie premiering her movies at the White House? The American government will never approve of such.

Isn’t it shameful that the President seems to have become the prerequisite for making movies or holding events in this country? The president’s goodwill and open arms shouldn’t be given misguided interpretations. Stop painting the presidency as a place for extra curricula activities. We need the president’s full concentration at this material time when the country is at war on so many fronts.

There are indeed more pressing matters calling for the president’s attention. The chibok girls issue is still a lingering embarrassment to the nation, while Grand scale corruption is another stigma that is yet to be dealt with. With ebola and terrorism crying to the president for attention, isn’t it extremely insensitive of any individual taking his or her selfish interest to a president that already seems overwhelmed with too many activities?

As a nation, we are at a delicate point. It is up to us if we are to get out of this mess. What Mr. President needs most importantly is our prayers not seduction or distraction.

Van Gaal insists United can still win the league this season

Louis van Gaal has said that Manchester United, can still end up as Premier League champions, despite their winless start to the season.

The Red Devils lost on the opening day to Swansea and dreww 1-1 at Sunderland last Sunday. But Van Gaal insists that he is used to a slow start.

“We can be the champions still in England now, in my first year. Maybe you shall laugh, but also in my former clubs I have started like this, so for me it’s not big news or different, because I have already said that,” Van Gaal told reporters.

“But you have to survive as a trainer, as a manager. You have to survive, because, nowadays, the fans are asking for results and this is the question: can I receive enough time to do all the steps we have to do?

“Maybe you the media can support Louis van Gaal. Do you believe in him? Yes? Okay. What a fantastic end, a fantastic end.”

Chelsea trigger Remy’s £8m release clause

Jose Mourinho has moved quickly to replace AC Milan-bound Fernando Torres, by activating Loic Remy’s release clause, which is around £8m.

The Blues confirmed on Friday, that they had reached an agreement on a two-year loan deal for Torres to move, leaving only Diego Costa and Didier Drogba as the senior strikers at Stamford Bridge.

It is understood that Chelsea first contacted Remy’s agents, when they feared Drogba had sustained a long term injury earlier this month.

The 27-year-old, who will earn around £80,000-per-week, spent last season on loan at Newcastle where he scored 14 goals in 26 league games.

“He’s not a real centre forward” – Wenger explains Podolski snub

Arsene Wenger has admitted that Lukas Podolski is not a real centre forward, as the German remains on the sidelines since his return from an extended break.

The player was linked with a move to Juventus this summer, but the deal seemed to have been called off after Olivier Giroud fractured his ankle in the Gunners’ 2-2 draw with Everton.

Although Wenger named Podolski as one of Giroud’s replacements, the former Cologne man is yet to feature this season, like his compatriots Mesut Ozil and Per Mertesacker.

“He can score goals. He’s not a real centre forward, he’s a striker on the flank or behind the striker but he’s not the target man,” Wenger said.

“He has a role to play but at the moment the experiences we had when he was a target man, he likes to come to the ball.

“He is not the guy who likes to go too much behind, he likes to come to the ball. He’s a very good link player. At the moment I see more Sanogo, Sanchez, players who are really good at going in behind. Not Podolski.”

Artistes who flaunt wealth on social media appear Superficial & Unapproachable -Reminisce

Talented rapper,Reminisce was recently listed by Time Magazine and one of the 7 world  rappers to watch out for. He was the only African rapper on the list. In an interview with Punch. He opened up on why he doesn't flaunt his wealth, and not being credited for writing songs.
On why he doesn't flaunt wealth ...
“I am a very reserved artiste. I am able to differentiate between Reminisce the artiste and Remi the family man. That is why I don’t promote luxury. There is nothing I need that I can’t afford, but I am not going to show off on social media. When artistes do such a thing, they appear superficial and unapproachable to their fans. Instead, I simply invest in people.”
On writing a song for Goldie...

“I wrote the hit song, Don’t Touch my Body for late Goldie and was never credited. But, it is okay. There are many songs you write and don’t get credited for. I don’t really care about such things, neither do I like to complain or bear grudges. I don’t really want to reveal or speak about others.”
On almost giving up
I
t’s true that I almost quit music four months before my fortune improved. I became a star around late 2011, after I released Kako Bi Chicken. The video of that song was released around the period that Nigerians were protesting against the removal of fuel subsidy. I had just become a father at that time and I realized that I couldn’t continue the same way.
“I almost quit music because I wasn’t making any money. You know, money controls the industry today, unlike the past when talent did.”

“I would have paid £100million for Lukaku” – Martinez talks up striker ahead of Chelsea’s visit

Everton manager Roberto Martinez, has insisted that paying £28million for Romelu Lukaku, represents a bargain.

The Belgian striker who spent last season on loan at Goodison Park, made the switch permanent this summer and Martinez claims he would have paid up to £100million to make it possible.

“It’s not about the value,” the Spanish tactician said. “I would have paid £100million for Lukaku. If I had the money, yes, why not? The figure is insignificant. It is about the character and type of player you want in the group.

“Sometimes a player at £3million can be an expensive buy and sometimes a player at £28million can be a very cheap buy.”

Lukaku will face his former team-mates and manager on Saturday in a Premier League clash, but Martinez says he does not see it as extra motivation.

“I know what you are saying,” he added. “My answer is, of course, he is human and leading up to the game people will say ‘you are facing your old team-mates and manager’.

“That’s normal. But what I am saying is that his level of performance will not change from against Arsenal or Leicester.

“He is not going through the motions, he is raising his levels for every game. Every game he is fresh, so I do not see any difference at all for this game.”

Ronaldo fires warning to Liverpool ahead of Champions League clash

Cristiano Ronaldo has warned Liverpool, that Real Madrid are out for revenge when both sides meet in this season’s Champions League.

The defending champions weree drawn with the Anfield side, Basle and Ludogorets and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers admitted that his dressing room are already looking forward to the double-header.

“Liverpool are a fantastic team,” Ronaldo, who was named UEFA Best Player in Europe on Thursday, said.

“They came very close last year to winning the Premier League so we know it’s going to be a very tough game at Anfield.

“If I was going back to Old Trafford, the reception from the fans would be amazing for me. Going to Liverpool will be very different – wow!

“Of course I know that it’s a very difficult place to go, although I won there a few times with United.”

The last time both teams faced each other in the competition, was in 2009, when Liverpool thumped the La Liga side 5-0 on aggregate. But Ronaldo insists there will be no repeat.

He said: “I know what happened the last time Real played Liverpool, but I was not there then. Now it’s different. Every game has a different story. We are a different team, with a different coach.

“Liverpool are different too, so let’s see who’s going to be the best. But it will be nice for me to face Liverpool. I’ve never played there since I came to Real Madrid.

“For me, knowing it’s going to be the first time, I’m looking forward to it. I know Anfield. But we are Real Madrid.”

“Keshi’s contract delay is because of N1million” – Minister of Sports

Minister of Sports Tammy Danagogo, has blamed the NFF crisis for the delay in tying up Stephen Keshi’s contract, but assured Nigerians it would be resolved soon.

Keshi has agreed to continue in charge of the Super Eagles on an interim deal and Danagogo has revealed that the Big Boss actually agreed to drop his initial request for a raise, so he could help Nigeria qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

“The NFF has been negotiating with Stephen Keshi but apparently because of the situation on ground the negotiation has not been very successful. If you look at it, his contract expired about when we just exited the 2014 World Cup in Brazil,” Danagogo said.

“Apparently the NFF as at then was not very eager to re-negotiate with him. So we (National Sports Commission) were trying to see whether the NFF will negotiate with him. They were on that when a few things stated coming up. Then Maigari left, Maigari was suspended and Mike Umeh came in. Umeh then commenced negotiation with him (Keshi) but negotiation was stalled because they couldn’t agree on the remuneration.

“We again told Umeh to allow Maigari to come in to finish his tenure and do a peaceful election. From that Maigari came back and they too said that that amount of money they won’t be able to agree with it.

“Then I look at it that we have a match on the 6th of September, why do we unduly delay the contract. So I called Keshi personally to know what the issues were. He told me what they have offered him and what he has asked to be paid.

“I asked him if he is desirous to do the job. He said he is desirous and I told him I will undertake to see that when the dust is settled on the NFF issue we will get him and the NFF to sit down and sign the contract. I then asked him to come and do the work and if need be the Ministry can pay him. I told him if the NFF cannot pay him the NSC can pay for things to be done.

“He then told me for the love of his country he will come and start and when the NFF is settled they can agree. What they have offered and what Keshi is demanding is not even more than a million naira difference. It is just for the NFF to be settled and then Keshi’s contract will be signed. The issue of what to pay Keshi is no longer a challenge.

“Even with what I have discussed with him now he can even waive that. So it is now left for the two sides to sit down, sign the contract and also agree on other issues in the contract. The issues to be resolved are assistant coaches, and so on. These are the details to be sorted out.”
