Orji receives Nigerian Army Chief, urges Nigerians to support security forces

Nigerians have been called on to encourage the Nigerian Army in the face of current security challenges confronting the country instead of constant criticism.

Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji, gave the advise at Government House in Umuahia, when he received the Chief of Army staff, Lieutenant Gen. Kenneth Minimah, who paid him a courtesy visit along with other senior officers.

He said that the Army has been doing “a very good job” in fighting the Boko Haram sect and must be supported if terrorism is to be successfully wiped out.

Orji opined that the Army has to take time to adapt to tackle terrorism, which according to him is totally new to Nigerians, noting that many soldiers have sacrificed their lives while fighting insurgency in the country.

He expressed confidence that the Army boss will perform creditably in office and assured him of the continued support and partnership of the Abia State government.

The governor further appreciated the Nigerian Army for the tremendous assistance it rendered to Abia State to end kidnapping and for the establishment of 14 brigade of the Army at Ohafia which, he noted, has enhanced security in the state.

He further appealed to the Chief of Army Staff to provide military equipment at the Army Camp at Aba, give preference to Abia during recruitment and also ensure that the Army in the state work in synergy with the police and other security agencies.

Earlier in his speech, Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minima said he was in the state to visit military formations as part of his familiarization tour of the 82 Division, Enugu.

He thanked Governor Orji for his “exemplary” assistance to the Nigerian Army and urged him not to relent.

2015: We’ve raised N20m for Jonathan to purchase PDP nomination form – Group

A political group, House to House Organisation, has disclosed that it has earmarked N19.5 million to purchase nomination form for President Goodluck Jonathan when he eventually declares to contest for re-election in 2015.

The group made the announcement when it paid a courtesy call on the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Wale Oladipo, in Abuja on Tuesday.

“We have saved about N19.5 million to purchase nomination form for President Jonathan once he declares,” said Ogidi Bara, the Director General of the Organisation.

Mr. Bara added that his organisation was ready to go from “house to house, wife to husband and do everything possible to sensitise the people on why Jonathan should continue”.

Responding, PDP scribe said it was in the interest of the nation for the president to contest the 2015 presidential election.

Mr. Oladipo stated that the ruling party was noted for internal democracy, its service towards the development of the nation and passion for humanity.

“PDP stands for progress and the transformation agenda of this present administration must be taken to the end. We know that our leader, the President, represents stability, he knows that his enormous power has to be exercised with moderation and a sledge hammer should not be used to kill a fly,” he posited.

Oladipo further criticized the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, for “promoting violence and lacking in internal democracy.”

“APC as far as I know is a drug that has been banned all over. The name also means Armoured Personnel Carrier, which is synonymous to violence.

Taking a swipe at former Lagos governor, Bola Tinubu,, Oladipo said “Our party is not where a single man will sit in Lagos and decide who will be next governor. We follow due process and do the needful.”

HURIWA absolves NYSC of N90bn fraud allegations, abetting ghost corpers

A pro-democracy non-governmental organization, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has granted a clean bill of health to the management of the National Youth Service Corps [NYSC], following its findings that there is no truth in the allegation that the management of the Scheme diverted N90 billion unspent funds and abetted ghost participants in the annual youth scheme.

The human rights group has accordingly noted that it had suspended its decision to drag the management of the NYSC before the coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and other relevant anti-graft agencies over allegations of fraudulent practices brought against it by some concerned petitioners working in the NYSC.

A petition, it received, two weeks ago from some anonymous insiders in the NYSC, alleging fraud and corrupt practices in the scheme, sprung HURIWA into action when its team of investigators stormed Okonjo-Iweala’s office and the offices of anti-graft agencies to dig into the matter relying on the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act (FoI).

The group’s mission was specifically to establish the veracity, or otherwise, of allegations bordering on fraudulent diversion of N90 billion unspent funds by the management of the NYSC and the existence of a properly coordinated scheme which conceals the existence of ghost corps members in the yearly exercise.

In a statement by HURIWA’s national coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and Media affairs Director, Ms. Zainab Yusuf, the group said it had found out that the allegations were not true as it had shown evidence of refund of unspent funds by the current NYSC management.

The statement reads in part: “Following intense investigation and full disclosure of relevant facts and documentary evidence sighted by us, we can, for the time being, state without equivocation that we are unable to trace the existence of any ghost participants in the annual national youth service scheme run by the management of the NYSC.

“We approached the management of the NYSC in Abuja and we have since sighted some high profile authentic auditing information indicating that, in the last couple of years, some huge unspent funds were refunded to the coffers of the federation.”

Affirming that the group had not seen any trace of the existence of ghost participants in the programme based on the foregoing, it further argued: “we were also shown documentary evidence indicating that the participants are paid the correct feeding stipends as approved by the federal government of Nigeria.

“Except other superior information is made available to us, we can for the time being state that we have suspended our decision to so proceed with our mechanism of advocacy for a probe of these allegations.

“We will however continue to press ahead with our demand through the FOI for full disclosure to be made to us by way of documentary evidence and not just sighting of these official documents which were said to be classified,” the statement concluded.

Suarez promises not to bite again

Luis Suarez has vowed never to bite another player again, after Barcelona officially unveiled him on Tuesday.

The uruguay international is currently serving a four-month ban, for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup.

Suarez cannot play in a competitive match for the Catalans until October 26 and has promised a similar scenario will not occur again.

“The dream of playing for Barca comes from many years ago, as a kid. Everyone knows my relationship with family living here,” he said.

“When I came to watch games here, I thought ‘One day I will play here’. But it seemed something far away. There were offers from other clubs but when the Barca option came up I didn’t think twice.

“My ban is what it is and we have to accept it. I have apologised and I’ve been talking to professionals in order to deal with it. I say to all the fans do not worry about that. I won’t be doing that anymore.

“It’s a difficult moment for me. I had the same situation last year at Liverpool (when he was banned for biting Branislav Ivanovic). I started to play on September 20 but I was able to train and help my team-mates off the pitch.

“I’m here to do important things at Barca. Everything that happens in the past, that needs to be forgotten. If I start thinking about everything I’ve gone through, I wouldn’t be able to sleep.”

Suarez spoke about making his Barcelona debut against Mexican side Leon on Monday: “Playing at the Camp Nou was spectacular, very emotional. I still can’t believe it. This is a dream come true.”

Fellaini’s exit from United halted by ankle injury

Louis van Gaal’s plan to offload Marouan Fellaini, has suffered a setback after the midfielder picked up an ankle injury in training.

The big Belgian, who arrived on transfer deadline last summer for £27.5m, was photographed limping on crutches and wearing a protective boot.

Although reports say he has not broken his ankle, there are fears he might have suffered ankle ligament damage. The full extent of the injury will determined after further scans.

Fellaini is yet to scored a competitive goal for the Red Devils and made only 16 starts last campaign. Van Gaal was keen to sell the player or send him out on loan, but those plans have to be shelved now.

Muller explains why he turned down Manchester United move

Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller, has revealed that Manchester United offered him big wages, to move to Old Old Trafford this summer.

The German, who scored 26 goals for Pep Guardiola’s team last season and won the World Cup this year with his country, however chose to extend his contract for another five years with the Bundesliga champions.

When German newspaper Bild, asked him if United came close to signing him, he replied: “Of course.

“I was aware that I could earn more by making that transfer.

“The amount that foreign clubs were offering me was astronomical. But Bayern are my club, a change was not an issue for me.”

World football governing body FIFA, has today thrown out Barcelona’s appeal against their two-window transfer ban.

Barcelona were not allowed to conduct any transfer activity at all, after they were found guilty of breach of regulations relating to registration of youth footballers.

They were however given a stay of execution and they so far spent more than 100m on the likes of Luis Suarez, Thomas Vermaelen and Ivan Rakitic.

The official statement read: “The FIFA Appeal Committee has decided to reject the appeals lodged by Spanish club FC Barcelona and the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF) and to confirm in their entirety the decisions rendered by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee in the respective cases relating to the protection of minors.

“As such, FC Barcelona is to serve a transfer ban which will see the club prevented from registering any players at both national and international level for two complete and consecutive transfer periods, starting with the next registration period (January 2015) given that the appeal of the club had been granted suspensive effect by the chairman of the FIFA Appeal Committee.

“FC Barcelona has also been ordered to pay a fine of CHF 450,000 and been given a period of 90 days from today in which to regularise the situation of all minor players concerned.

“Meanwhile, the RFEF has been ordered to pay a fine of CHF 500,000 and granted a period of one year in which to regularise their regulatory framework and existing system concerning the international transfer of minors in football.”

The Spanish club have released their own statement, confirming their intention to appeal to CAS.

“Following the resolution announced today by the FIFA Appeals Committee on violations of regulations regarding the transfer and registration of children aged under 18 years, FC Barcelona announces that it shall continue defending its interests before the highest sporting authority, in this case the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS),” it read.

“FC Barcelona may not in any way share a resolution that is an affront to the spirit of our Masia, a world renowned example of academic, human and sporting

“I was once called Skinny in School” – Tiwa Savage

Top female singer, Tiwa Savage Balogun has shared her childhood experience with her fans. She stated that during her schooldays in London, her classmates bullied her for her skin colour and went further to say she was then described as skinny.

Tiwa Savage made this disclosure while praising her mother who marked her birthday on Tuesday, August 19, 2014.

The songstress said despite the humiliation, her mother encouraged her to be courageous, reminding her of her African root, and how rich her culture is.

“During my high school days, I was bullied for several years, I would get jumped on the bus, head flushed down the toilet and so on. It got so bad that I did something drastic and life threatening because I was so depressed.

“My mother was called to school on several occasions and each time she came, she would ask to see the other students bullying me and would always pray for us all. Of course, they would joke and laugh but my mother was always so calm and reserved and she would take me home, cook me Naija food (we were living in London at the time) and she would make me realize how loved I was and how rich my culture is.

“How beautiful I am being a Nigerian girl (I was bullied for being African, skinny, dark and I had a strong Naija accent). What my mother didn’t do was fight, shout or argue with the other girls or their parents (who were at times very rude and disrespectful) Instead she showered me with love and reminded me where I was from,” she narrated.

Tiwa described her mother as her best friend, hero and biggest inspiration.

“My outfit to Aso Villa was appropriate” – Omoni Oboli slams critics

Omoni Oboli held a private screening of her movie,Mrs Elliot at the Aso Rock villa with President Jonathan in attendance. However, all eyes were on her cleavage which many deemed a bit inappropriate. She reacted in a chat with Punch

I styled myself and I thought the outfit was appropriate because there were no vital parts showing. Sometimes the angles with which pictures are taken can portray certain things you do not have intention of portraying. We have pictures from the event and you won’t see what people are seeing. The truth is that a lot of people are very bitter and when people are bitter they try to look for a lot of negative things in every positive thing. It is unfortunate that we are in the limelight because if someone else wears that outfit no one will say anything. I don’t even read blogs and see the comments. My true fans know who I am and my intention when I am doing things.”

On reports that she got money

“Before the screening, they asked me what I wanted and I said I didn’t want anything but that the President and his people should see the movie and give their blessings. For me that is good enough for the industry. The first time I ever saw the President was at his brother’s burial ceremony, which I attended. I don’t know him from anywhere or personally.
“During the event, President Jonathan said the government didn’t have money to give me and he said this in front of everybody. So if anybody is going aside to say something else, they are wrong. I returned to Lagos with the small purse I took to. the event and after the event I went back to my hotel room and left for Lagos the next morning. I didn’t stay back in Aso Rock or sneak out to meet anybody. I am still hoping they will call us to come and take something, that they are impressed,”

On how she got the president to watch the movie, she said

The Film Producers Marketers Association of Nigeria actually wrote to the presidency.“To our greatest surprise, they said they would do it. The event had the president, Vice-President, PDP chairman, some senators and ministers and two governors in attendance. It was huge and it is a big achievement for Nollywood. I sat on the high table with all these men and never expected that I would get to this point. The President said Nollywood had put Nigeria on the world map and contributed to our economy in so many ways and so could not be ignored.”

President Jonathan urges Nigerians to be advocate of humanity in the face of terror

President Goodluck Jonathan has challenged Nigerians to be advocates of humanity in consideration of the millions of people affected by wars, natural disasters, sickness and famine and those working to relieve their sufferings.

Jonathan, who was speaking through Vice President, Namadi Sambo, gave the charge at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa on Tuesday during the commemoration of the World Humanitarian Day in the country.

The event which was organized by the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, NCFRMI, and the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has the theme: “More People than Ever before Need Our Help”.

Jonathan regretted that “those in need desperately require our help but our ability to reach out to them is sadly increasingly challenging and at risk.” He said humanitarian workers have no other agenda than saving lives and delivering the basic necessities of life which include food, water, shelter, medical care and protection for the most vulnerable.

The president posited that in spite of the passion humanitarian workers have to save lives; they sometimes become targets of hostilities in the course of discharging their duty.

“Violent attacks on humanitarian personnel are increasingly becoming more frequent and brutal and in the last decade, the number of attacks on them has increased tremendously, resulting in more than 100 deaths annually,” he said.

He further appreciated the courage of the medical personnel who attended to the first Ebola case in the country and consoled with the families of those who lost their lives.

“Recently, some medical personnel, driven by passion and a strong sense of our common humanity, went beyond the call of duty to try to save the life of Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian carrier of the Ebola Virus and as a result got infected and some casualties were even recorded,” he said.

Jonathan assured that the Federal Government was doing everything possible to make sure that those still alive got the best medical attention while praying to God to save their lives. He consoled the families of those who lost their lives at the bombing of the United Nations (UN) building in Abuja in 2011 and other acts of insurgency, assuring that the country will soon overcome the evil of insurgency in the country.

While calling on Nigerians to continue to support the Transformation Agenda of the Administration by helping in finding solutions to the societal challenges, the Vice President disclosed that President Jonathan had taken a giant step by setting up two important committees, the Presidential Flood Relief Rehabilitation Committee, chaired by Aliko Dangote and Victims of Terror Support Fund, chaired by Theophilius Danjuma, all aimed at cushioning the effects of natural disasters.

The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Sani Sidi, in his remark, stated that commemorating the day had become imperative in view of the upsurge of growing threats, attacks, kidnapping, maiming, injury and loss of lives of humanitarian aid workers during both local and international operations.

Hear him: “Under the grim scenarios of conflicts and natural disasters, humanitarians have committed their lives, worked with their hearts, sweat and blood to save lives and bring succor to the distresses in times when the major concern of everyone is self-preservation”.

2015: Biu youths waiting to stone Governor Shettima

Angry residents of Biu in Borno State are set to give the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima a bad welcome to the area.

Aliyu Mamman Kachallah, representing Biu in the Borno State House of Assembly, narrowly escaped being lynched by the angry youths, who went bizarre on hearing that the governor was coming to visit them.

According to the youths, Governor Shettima has no business coming to Biu knowing that he has not done anything for the people in his three years administration.

Shehu Usman, ina phone chat with DailyPost said the governor was coming to tell the people more lies.

“The last time Governor Kashim Shettima was in Biu, he promised us heaven on earth, but nothing came out of it. He has neglected the people of southern Borno; we are not going to support him; that is why we beat up ‘Wapanka’ to send a massage to the governor that he is not welcome in Biu”.

He said the youths were prepared to welcome any other politician who is seeking elective office but had long given up on Governor Shettima.

Ebola: Nigerian celebrities mourn late Doctor Adadevoh

Nigerian celebrities have continued to react to the death of Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh, the consultant physician, who died on Tuesday after contracting the Ebola Virus from the late Patrick Sawyer.

Different celebrities have written their own tributes on the doctor who saved the country from the Ebola epidemic by refusing to cave in to the pressure by the Liberian Embassy to allow Patrick Sawyer leave the hospital.

While some say Nigeria should sanction the United States, others stated that the Federal government should give the late doctor a posthumous national award.

Controversial Actress, Halima Abubaka posted on Instagram thus, “Rip brave woman. Hmmm and the doctor slept.. Rip ma#EbolaAwareness# victim#sad”

Singer Lynxx also wrote “I’m beyond sad…. Speechless to say the least… This isn’t someone I heard about through the news but a Friends Mum I met almost 20 years ago. I cant even fathom how he / his family feels! But God would be your strength through this trying time! Your death would not be in vain for you stood up to fight for the world, not just your country! May The Good Lord rest your gentle soul in Jesus name! Amen!”

Actress Rita Dominic posted on Instagram “A Hero or Heroine refers to characters who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness display courage and the will for self-sacrifice.. That is, heroism-for some greater good of all humanity.. Rest In Peace, Dr AMEYO ADADEVOH..”

Singer, Weird MC tweeted “Dr Adadevoh Thank you ….Fly like an Eagle….Thanks ever so much.”

Actress Stella Damasus wrote “Kind and beautiful Dr Ameyo Adadevoh stood her ground to protect Nigeria. She refused to allow Mr. sawyer leave first consultants hospital even when the Liberian Ambassador pressured her to release him. Imagine what would have happened if she had let him go. Ebola would have been more widespread than what we are dealing with now. She died this evening and I strongly believe she deserves a national posthumous award. The Cross River state government should honour this woman because Dr. sawyer was supposed to attend a seminar in Calabar.

If she had not stopped him from going there, what do you think would have happened to the people of Cross River?

Speaking further, Stella shared a photo of the late Doctor and wrote “I know that since this is not a glamorous picture of me, it will not get many views. It shows how vain and insensitive a lot of us have become. I really want to see how many reports this will get and how many people will talk about it. Is she going to be a forgotten case like the fuel subsidy, the child marriage issue, or the Chibok girls? Why do we easily move from one thing to the other without seeing these issues through till we get results?”
