Martino blames Barcelona’s opponents for Messi’s poor form

Martino 2Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino, has blamed his team’s opponents for Lionel Messi’s slump in form and praised his compatriot for responding to criticisms with the winning goal, as the Catalans defeated Athletic Bilbao 2-1 over the weekend.
Messi’s level of performances have been under the microscope, after he failed to lift his team as they were dumped out of the UEFA Champions League by Atletico Madrid and lost the Copa del Rey final to Real Madrid – three defeats in eight days.
Martino claims that rivals have been working out how to stop his team playing and that his why Messi has not been firing on all cylinders.
“You must look at how the rivals play,” Martino said. “This is a problem which Barcelona has for a long time. When teams defend with a lot of players close to the area it becomes difficult. I do not believe Messi has changed his way of playing, but he found a game in which he felt better. I did not have to talk [especially] with him, nor will I talk with him next week. We talk about other things. I was happy for his goal, for him, and because the team won.
“In Messi’s case, I am happy that he can respond in the way he responded. He has a great advantage, he does not defend himself with his mouth, he defends himself with football. As he does not talk, he does his talking on the pitch. Of each 100 games, 99 he plays well, and he always gives his answers there. What happened this week was a bit hard, so [the goal and win] made me happy.”

Courtois happy to face Chelsea in Champions League

Courtois falls over the ballThibaut Courtois has expressed his relief, after UEFA cleared him to play against his parent club Chelsea, in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Last week, UEFA waived a fee that Atletico Madrid were to pay the Blues, if the two clubs face each other. This means the 21-year-old goalkeeper, will be between the sticks in the two legs of the encounter.
“I’m very relieved. That we’ve drawn Chelsea is special because even though I’m at Atleti, Chelsea are my club,” the Belgian told Uefa.com.
It is the first time the La Liga club will qualify for the Champions League last four since 1974 and Courtois is desperate to win silverware with Diego Simeone’s side.
“I want to win trophies here and I’ll be an Atleti supporter for these two games, but at all other times I’m a Chelsea fan too,” added Courtois, who has never played for the Stamford Bridge club since signing a five-year contract on his arrival from Genk for an undisclosed fee in 2011.
“I hope they win the Premier League, just not these two matches. I really hope we can reach the final as we’re so close. They’re the favourites, but Barca were too.”
