2014 Commonwealth Games: Federation queries Nigeria over jersey

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has queried the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) over the inconsistency in the use of jerseys by its athletes at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

An official of Team Nigeria, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Glasgow on Tuesday on condition of anonymity, said the federation warned Nigeria to desist from the inconsistency or face sanctions.

“The Commonwealth Games Federation queried Nigeria, expressing displeasure at the dressing of the athletes in different colours and different sponsors that are not partners with the Commonwealth Games Federation.

“At times, when some of the players are competing, they cover the sponsor’s name on their jerseys with masking tape and at times the tape will just fall off.

“So, the federation felt embarrassed with that development and decided to query Nigeria through the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC),’’ the source said.

DailyPOst recalls that NSC had given the various sports federations’ money to acquire their own sporting apparels either through direct purchase or sponsorship.

Owing to that, Nigeria athletes have appeared in different jersey colours with the branding of different sponsors inscribed on them.

Sani Ndanusa, President of the NOC, confirmed the federation’s query.

He, however, said that efforts were being made to address the issue “so that the development that led to the query does not happen again.

”NOC will take full control of the provision of the sports wears; there are guidelines which we must follow, so NOC will enforce it.

”The guidelines also include timely preparations; NOC will not completely leave the provision of the sports wears in the hands of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

”We will ensure that all the requirements are met; even the logo on the shirts has a size specification and we know, so we will enforce it henceforth.”

Nigeria has so far won 3 golds and other medals. However, one of the golds is still in contention over allegation of dope.

Chika Amalaha fails doping test after winning gold for Nigeria in weightlifting

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has announced that Chika Amalaha, who won gold for Nigeria in weightlifting, has failed a doping test.

Chief executive of CGF, Mike Hooper, confirmed that the 16-year-old, who pulled a total of 196 points in snatch and clean and jerk in the 53kg, tested positive for diuretics and masking agents.

He said: “We [have] issued a formal notice of disclosure to an athlete following an adverse analytical finding as a consequence of an in-competition test.

“That athlete is Nigerian weightlifter Chika Amalaha who was tested on July 25th. That athlete has now been suspended from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.”

The backup ‘B’ sample will undergo tests on Wednesday.

Amalaha, who has been provisionally suspended, came tops ahead of Dika Toua from Papa New Guinea and India’s Santoshi Matsu and told reporters after her victory that “it was hard work, training, a lot of pain.”

Van Gaal not keen on engaging Mourinho in mind games

Louis van Gaal has said that he will not get into any mind games with Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho next season.

Both managers worked together at Barcelona for three years, where Mourinho assisted the Dutchman.

Mourinho, who has a reputation to wind up fellow managers, said earlier this week that United overpaid for Luke Shaw, who they signed for £27m and pay £100,000 a week.

Van Gaal insisted they are still friends and nothing will change.

“I don’t think I will fall out with him. He is my friend,” Van Gaal said of Mourinho. “I don’t think (I will fall out with) all the other managers. I have full respect for all my colleagues.

“For me (mind games) are not so interesting. I have to manage my club. That is already difficult enough. I am not concerned with other clubs or other managers.”

Nigerian journalists rubbish our reputation to sell papers-Mercy Aigbe

Mercy Aigbe has opened up on the major challenge faced by actors።..She told NigerianFilms
"Nigerian journalists have not been fair to us (actors). It’s often very sad when you see untrue, dirty details about you in the papers. They rubbish our reputation in order to sell their paper and it’s heart breaking.Again, in the industry, you see people beefing you here and there. They feel jealous because you are relatively young in the industry and you are getting more roles than they who are veterans in the field. But what they don’t understand is that it is by the Grace of God. The Bible says that it is not the power of he that ‘runneth’ but in God that ‘showeth’ mercy. God even says in the bible that “I will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.”

Pellegrini demands more from Iheanacho

Manuel Pellegrini has tasked Kelechi Iheanacho not to rest on his laurels, as the Nigerian youngster continues to impress in pre-season games.

The 17-year-old scored his second goal in two matches, as the current Premier League champions defeated AC Milan 5-1 on Sunday in Pennsylvania.

“We have a lot of young players here with us. We have Kelechi Iheanacho, Greg Leigh, Jason Denayer and several others,” Pellegrini told the club’s official website.

“It’s an important chance for them to show what they can do, and maybe this moment it is their moment.”

Juventus say Vidal will only leave if he demands a move away

As the speculations around Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal continues to increase, the club’s CEO Guiseppe Marotta has said that the club will not sell him except he asks to leave.

The Chile international is drawing strong interest from Manchester United, with the Premier League team ready to pay up to €54million for the 27-year-old.

Last week, Vidal claimed he was “not going to Manchester”, but Marotta says the player’s future might lie in his own hands.

“We have clear ideas. We renewed [Vidal's] contract a few months ago just because we knew we could count on an important element,” Marotta told Sky Italia.

“We don’t want to sell Vidal, there are only rumours because he is a player among the best in the world. We never activated a clause to try to sell him – if he doesn’t show an intention to leave, our position won’t change.”

Iheanacho scores again for Manchester City in 5-1 win over Milan

Nigerian youngster Kelechi Iheanacho scored in his second successive Manchester City game, as the Premier League side crushed AC Milan 5-1 in their International Champions Cup opener.

The 17-year-old toe-poked the ball from outside the area, to give City a 4-0 lead shortly before the break.

Stefan Jovetic and Scott Sinclair had opened scoring for the English champions with two early strikes, before Jesus Navas saw his acrobatic effort deflected past Michael Agazzi in the Milan goal.

Sulley Muntari pulled one back for Fillipo Inzaghi’s men, but Jovetic scored again 12 minutes after the break after Navas sent him free.

The loss is Milan’s second in the International Champions Cup, while Italian clubs have only won one game.

Alexis Sanchez to miss Arsenal’s trip to Austria

Alexis Sanchez will officially start life as an Arsenal player on Monday, after his £30m move from Barcelona, but will not travel with his new team-mates to their four-day training camp in Austria.

The Chilean forward is still trying to finalise his working visa in Paris, before moving to London, where he will be training while the squad is away.

Arsene Wenger and his team arrived back in England after a four-day trip to the USA, where they were beaten 1-0 by New York Red Bulls and will travel to Austria, shortly before they play Benfica in the Emirates Cup on Saturday.

“I don’t think Sanchez will come to Austria because he has to go to Paris to get a visa, so he will only go so he will work in London,” Wenger said.

It’s official! Atletico Madrid agree Griezmann deal

Antoine Griezmann is close to a move to Atletico Madrid from Real Soceidad, after both clubs reached an agreement over a €25m deal.

The two La Liga sides were locked in negotiations for over a month and have now agreed terms for the transfer.

“Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad have reached an agreement for the transfer of Antoine Griezmann,” a statement on the official Atletico website reads.

“The young French player will undergo a medical before signing a contract with our club.”

Griezmann was part of the French team that were eliminated from the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and made over 200 appearances for Soceidad.

The 23-year-old forward will become Atletico’s fourth summer-signing after Miguel Moya, Jan Oblak and Mario Mandzukic arrived earlier in the summer.

Rafael leaves Manchester United’s pre-season camp

Manchester United’s Rafael da Silva, has left the club’s pre-season tour of the US with three matches left, because of a groin injury.

The Brazilian picked up the knock during training, before the Red Devils faced Roma in Denver.

A statement on the club’s official website said: “As he was unlikely to participate in the remaining tour games, returning to the Aon Training Complex affords the best overall option for his recovery in time to continue pre-season preparation when the team returns.”

United play Swansea at Old Trafford in their first Premier League game on August 16.
